Botetourt bands at BandFest

At least four bands including present or former students fromLord Botetourt High School took part in BandFest on March 27 atNorthside High School. The Botetourt-based bands were A.M. Avenue,Echo Theory, Owners of the Land and Redemption.

Fishing Rodeo on April 17

Camp Eagle in Fincastle will hold a fishing rodeo on April 17.

It will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will beserved. The rodeo is for children and disabled sportsmen.

There will be fishing, archery, BB guns, a climbing wall andmore.

There is no charge to participate.

Sharing God's Grace with food, entertainment

The April meeting of 'Sharing God's Grace,' the monthly gatheringfor fellowship, food and entertainment at Wheatland Lutheran Churchwill meet on Tuesday, April 20 at noon. The program will bepresented by Donald T. Thorne from the Commonwealth Council onAging. He will discuss the many resources available to seniors tocope with the challenges of getting older. We all know that 'Agingisn't for sissies,' so come to hear suggestions to make lifeeasier. The community is invited to attend, beginning with lunchserved at noon by the ladies of the church, followed by theprogram. A free will offering is requested. New doctor at Shenandoah Podiatry

Daniel Yeaman, DPM, is a graduate of Virginia CommonwealthUniversity and the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine. He completeda three year surgical residency at Heritage Valley Health System inBeaver, Pa., followed by a one year fellowship in diabetic limbsalvage. His specialties are management and reconstruction of thediabetic foot and ankle. He also treats painful foot conditionssuch as heel spurs, neuropathy and skin conditions such as plantarwarts, ingrown toenails and fungal nails. He has traveled to Honduras to assist in surgery for children born with footdeformities such as clubfeet and has a history of localvolunteerism. He is a member of the Virginia Podiatric MedicalAssociation and American Podiatric Medical Association. He is boardqualified in foot surgery including reconstructive rearfoot andankle procedures. In his free time, Dr. Yeaman enjoys hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.

Springwood Open

The 15th annual 'Springwood Open' took place in Pinehurst, NC,after the second February snowstorm. While Botetourt dug out of thesnow, the following residents played golf and socialized in agreener North Carolina.

Participants were: Debbie Young, Ryan Shotwell, Dot Bolling,Ralph Mundy, Brian Sink, Webster Booze, Ralph McCampbell, DocLePeter, Dale Gore, Linda Doolittle, Jamey Napier, Royal Rodgers,Jim Barley, Tony Baker, Marty Frances, Ken Rhodes, Janet Cockran,Mike Jordan, Gary Mundy, Ned Honts, Jim Swortzel, Sam Greer and JimKetson.

This has been a busy Pokemon season for Botetourt's Logan Honts. He's been playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game for almost a year,and has attended tournaments and organized events throughoutVirginia and North Carolina.

On Jan. 2, Logan finished 2nd in the Staunton City Championshipsin the Junior Division (children age 10 and younger). He traveledto Staunton with his father and mother, Joel and Marthe Honts, toplay at The Dragon's Lair, a trading card store in downtownStaunton.

After this successful showing, Logan attended the Virginia State Championship Tournament on March 13th in Dale City. In this state-wide group of Juniors, Logan placed 13th.

Feeding on this success, Logan and his family traveled toCharlotte, NC to play in the North Carolina State Championships. After 5 hard-fought 40 minute round-robin matches, Logan's recordwas 3-2, tied for 6th in the Juniors' group. By virtue of PokemonOrganized Play's rules, he placed 9th, by less than 1 percentagepoint in the tiebreaker format: opponent's strength of schedule andopponent's opponent's strength of schedule.

Next on Logan's calendar: a visit to the Regional Championshipoutside of Richmond and the National Championships in Indianapolisthis summer. At stake in Indianapolis are prizes ranging frompacks of cards to scholarships and invitations to the WorldChampionships this summer in Hawaii.

Powder Puff Derby

Botetourt Service Unit Girl Scouts held its second annual Father/Daughter Powder Puff Derby Saturday March 6. Fathers and daughtersused pinewood derby kits to design a car. The event was open togirls ages kindergarten through high school seniors. Forty-ninegirls and their fathers participated. The winner of Best in Showwas Virginia Peay of Buchanan Troop 848. Each girl received aparticipation patch, certificate, and goodie racing cup. Specialthanks to Montvale Recreation Center for the use of its facility.Botetourt Service Unit serves girls ages kindergarten through high school seniors in Botetourt Country, Montvale, and Villamont.

Hogwarts experience at girls camp

Girls 8-17 are invited to 'Hogwarts -- the Summer Session' atIcimani Adventure Center in Roanoke. The camp, sponsored by GirlScouts of Virginia Skyline Council, will run from 10 a.m. onSunday, August 1, to 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 7.

The secrets of this magical world await discovery. Come besorted. Battle other houses in various wizarding classes (Healing,Magical Creatures, Archery, Wilderness Survival and more) anddifferent electives (Quidditch, Dueling Club, Muggle Studies andmore). Evening activities include Hogsmead, talent show, campfire,Wands-at-the-Ready and trivia tournament. But Hogwarts is neverquiet. Can you solve the mystery in time?

Girls ages 8-17 may attend as campers. Girls who completed grade8 or above in the 2009-2010 school year may serve as CounselorApprentices if they have completed the required council trainingcourse and camp-specific training course. CAs must also haveexperience working with youth and must be willing to design and actout a character in the mystery.

Girls ages 16-18 who completed grade 10 or above in the 2009-2010 school year may serve as Junior Counselors if they havecompleted the required council training course and camp-specifictraining. Junior Counselors must also have experience working withyouth and must be willing to design and act out a character in themystery.

CAs and Junior Counselors serve for the entire camp session andmust be willing to spend every night on site.

The cost is $189, which includes a CD of pictures, hand-carvedwand, tie dye, wizard robes, program activities, meals/lodgings andmuch more. There's an additional $12 membership fee for non-GirlScouts.

Farmer's Market coming to Troutville Park

Beginning May 8, every Saturday morning from 7 a.m. until noon,The Troutville Park will host a Farmer's Market at Pavilion B.Friends of the Troutville Park will be in charge of collecting feeswhich will go to the upkeep of the park. Fees are very reasonable -- only $5 per week per spot. Troutville's Sunshine ladies willserve as hostesses.

The Farmer's Market was one of the major suggestions on theongoing vision development for the Town of Troutville. Last weekTown Council approved the Farmer's Market.

Mount Bethel Relay for Life fundraiser is Sunday

The Mt. Bethel Relay For Life Team will be at the Blue RidgeVineyard on Sunday, April 18th from 1 to 5 p.m.

The team will be selling hot dogs with homemade chili, slaw,macaroni salad and lot of Desserts.

The proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

Children's fishing carnival set for June 5

Botetourt Childrens' Fishing Carnival: Saturday, June 5, from 9a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Buchanan Carnival Grounds. Battle of Blue Grass to kick off Civil War Weekend

This is going to be an inaugural event for our Buchanan RotaryClub. We look forward to establishing this as an annual event thatkicks off the Buchanan Civil War re-enactment weekend. It will be 7p.m. on Friday, April 23, at the Buchanan Theatre on Main Street inBuchanan.

As people enter the Theatre there will be skirmishes in thestreet between the Rebel and Union soldiers. Once in the Theatrepeople will be entertained by five of the best regional bands thatwill be battling it out for the title 'Best Bluegrass in Buchanan.'The audience will participate in the winner's selection.

Girl Scout troop braves the cold

Ambassador Girl Scout Troop 83 in Bonsack has not let the coldweather stop their generous spirit. They spent the month of Februaryhelping others. The girls assembled a dozen hygiene kits, eachcontained a washcloth & hand towel, soap, toothbrush, nail clippers,comb, and band-aids. They were donated to the Bedford ChristianChurch youth group. The kits were added to a collection of over 50which will be shipped to Haiti for the relief efforts. AnotherFebruary evening was used to make over 30 fleece hats, sizesnewborn to adult, for 'Hats 4 the Homeless'. 'Hats 4 the Homeless'is a New Jersey-based organization that collects hats, scarves andgloves and distributes them to the homeless in New York Citythrough St. Francis Xavier's Soup Kitchen. Emilee Higgins, CadyEngland, and Katie Martin are troop members. Cindy Higgins is thetroop's leader.
